Location guide
Crantock, located on the north coast of Cornwall, United Kingdom, is one of the lesser-known, but still intriguing, surfing spots. Renowned for its pacey waves and golden beaches, it creates a relatively manageable condition for all levels of surfers. From a surfing perspective, Crantock presents a good blend of breaks. When there's a good North Atlantic swell with a strong westerly wind, Crantock boasts of incredible surf. The beach is sheltered to a certain extent by the headlands which could form ideal conditions for leg-aching left-handers. Crantock is also quite a vast beach. This means it's rarely crowded, which in the busy summer months is quite a luxury. But bear in mind though, when it gets warmer, the sea can turn busy with swimmers, bodyboarders, and surfers alike. The waves can be enjoyed at both high and low tide, but for less experienced surfers, it’s best around mid-tide. The beach break offers both left and right-hand waves. The surf quality can be excellent in the right conditions but can be unreliable due to its exposure to the wind. So as a surfer, you'd need to keep your eyes on the forecast for the right combination of wind and swell to catch Crantock at its best! In terms of hazards, there can be strong currents and rips at times, especially in bigger swells or spring tides. Moreover, the River Gannel at the eastern end of the beach can create dangerous conditions, so it’s recommended that surfers stick to the main beach area for safety purposes. Overall, Crantock offers a vibrant surfing scene with beautiful landscapes, and while it may not always be the most predictable spot, when the conditions align it can deliver a quality ride that will leave any surfer smiling.
