Location guide
Les Casernes, located on the coast of South West France, is a pristine surfing location favored by surfers of different levels. Hidden in a forest of maritime pine, Les Casernes can have different surf conditions depending on the season, time of day, wind, tide and swell direction. During the summer months, from June to August, the beach sees relatively consistent swells with somewhat less power. Waves can range between 1 to 1.5 metres in height, making them suitable for beginners and intermediate surfers. The water temperature is also quite pleasant, ranging from 19 to 21 degrees Celsius. However, bear in mind the beach can get crowded during midday, and it's advised to surf either early in the morning or late in the afternoon for a quieter session. Come autumn, from September to November, the waves begin to pick up in size and power. Swells can reach 2 to 2.5 metres, or even more. This is an excellent time for experienced surfers to showcase their abilities. With water temperatures starting to drop and the summer crowds starting to thin, these months can offer a surf experience that combines an exciting challenge with serenity. Winter months at Les Casernes, roughly from December through February, sees a drop in the temperature with an increase in the intensity of the swells. The waves during these months can be tough and heavy, reaching 3 metres or more. The water temperatures can also drop down to 12 to 14 degrees Celsius. It's advised to be well-prepared with a high-quality winter wetsuit, gloves, and boots before venturing out. Only surfers with advanced skills should attempt these conditions. The spring season, running from March until May, has relatively cooler water temperatures and unpredictable weather conditions. Waves can still reach considerable heights, making it great for experienced surfers. But also, smaller swells mixed in with the bigger ones can provide opportunities for beginners and intermediates, as long as they are careful. Overall, Les Casernes, with its wild beauty, high dunes, pine forest and powerful waves, can offer a challenging yet satisfying surfing experience for all levels. Remember, always consider the tides, wind, wave size and your own abilities before going into the surf. Timing and respect for the ocean are key to a successful session. Don't be discouraged by the often powerful waves; instead, make sure to swim parallel to the current to not waste energy trying to paddle straight against it. And of course, respect the local surf etiquette - this will ensure everyone can enjoy all that Les Casernes has to offer.
