Location guide

Nazaré, Portugal, is a world-renowned surfing destination known for its gigantic and challenging waves, a phenomena caused by the underwater Nazaré Canyon which amplifies the swell. The location provides dramatic and highly intense surfing condition, often considered as a significant trial even for the most experienced surfers. Its geographical location exposes it to consistent Atlantic swells, which, when combined with the canyon’s funnel-like shape, tends to generate colossal waves that can reach or even exceed 100 feet in height. In terms of water temperature, it's fairly stable, ranging from 59°F (15°C) in the summer and can drop to 56°F (13°C) during winter. Despite the chilly waters, it doesn't hinder the surfers to experience the monstrous waves Nazaré has to offer. The forecast is quite dynamic, where the surfing conditions can change rapidly. Weather, tide, wind direction and the structures of the waves are variable factors that contribute to the ever-changing conditions. This calls for a high level of resilience, preparedness, and understanding of the ocean’s behaviour among surfers. The beach breaks in Nazaré are of a different class as they regularly throw larger waves compared to most top surfing destinations. They are incredibly steep and powerful due to the deep water canyon, reminding any surfer of the oceans unyielding forces. When it's huge, these waves can get extremely hollow, fast and, of course, dangerous. Due to that, tow-in surfing is often engaged during big wave times to ensure safety while not losing any of the adrenaline rush. Nevertheless, Nazaré isn't always about gigantic waves. When the monstrous swells calm down, typically in the summer season, it can offer more leisurely, manageable conditions to beginners and intermediate surfers. It's truly a place that offers something for everyone, and possessing respect and understanding for the ocean is paramount. Nazaré, with its dramatic setting and majestic waves, both charms and challenges surfers, guaranteeing an unforgettable experience.
