Uluwatu in Indonesia is an iconic surfing destination that guarantees world-class conditions. The rugged coastline with limestone cliffs and crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean forms a stunning backdrop as surfers ride the perfect waves. When it comes to surfing conditions, they are mainly influenced by the tides, swell size, and wind patterns. At Uluwatu, the swell ranges from medium to large, making it suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. The size of the waves largely depends on the time of year. During the peak surf season, which happens from May to October, the southern hemisphere winter swell produces consistent sets of incredibly powerful waves. They can range anywhere from 1 to 5 meters in height, with the occasional wave reaching up to 8 meters during a solid swell. This is when one can experience Uluwatu at its finest, where surfers can ride incredibly long and fast waves. The breaks in Uluwatu are primarily left-hander, though the diversity of the surf spots here caters for different skill levels. For instance, Temples is known for its steep take-off and can be quite challenging, while Racetracks is famous for its incredibly fast barrels. Beginners might find Uluwatu a little intimidating, but there are sections like Secrets that offer more mellow and manageable waves, also suitable for intermediate surfers to enhance their skills. In terms of tides, surfing at Uluwatu is unique because it offers quality waves at any tide level. High tide usually delivers larger waves and can produce epic barrels, while low tide offers slower, but perfectly shaped and equally enjoyable waves, provided the swell is big enough. Mid tide is often seen as the best compromise, providing great conditions for a large surfboard. Concerning wind conditions, Uluwatu is best surfed in the morning before the wind picks up. The offshore easterly trade winds keep the surf clean during this time. Nevertheless, it is common to still find surfable waves in the late afternoon when the wind drops.
