Location guide

The surfing conditions at Bridlington, United Kingdom, have their unique charm complete with their distinct rhythm that is mostly fuelled by the character of the North Sea. Bridlington South is the popular spot mostly considered good for novices, with waves averaging around 3-6ft during the height of the winter season. Teachability from these waves gives way to enjoyable rides especially during a strong northerly swell. In contrast, the summer brings calmer, fun waves that are less intimidating but still a good way to vibe with the spirit of the sea. On the other hand, Bridlington North with its pier attracts a more seasoned crowd. The ‘Pier End’ as it is fondly called, is a bit more challenging with faster, stronger waves. The right swell direction, which is generally from the north, can really produce some excellent conditions, resulting in perfect A-frames around the pier which can produce left and right-hand rides. A word of caution here though - it sometimes gets crowded with swimmers, so it is better avoided during peak hours and summer holidays. Finally, the water quality in Bridlington is also subject to regular seasonal fluctuations and therefore, it's crucial to keep an eye on local updates. Also, special mention to the fact that the North Sea waters are generally cold throughout the year. Thus, it becomes imperative for surfers to invest in good quality wetsuits, boots, gloves and hoods, especially outside the peak summer months. Every surf spot has its rhythm and Bridlington, with its constantly changing tides and swells, is no different. It’s a place where patience is a virtue, but when all conditions align, the surf can be utterly rewarding for both beginners and seasoned surfers alike.
