Location guide
Jeffreys Bay, popularly known as "JBay," is located in South Africa's Eastern Cape. Famous for its consistent waves, it offers surfers a unique experience that is hard to replicate elsewhere. Being a world-renowned surf spot, Jeffrey's Bay has conditions that continuously challenge even the most experienced surfers. The surfing conditions at Jeffreys Bay can be described as diverse because of its variety of surf breaks. The Supertubes, arguably the most well-known break offers a fast, hollow right-hand point break, which makes for thrilling rides. This is the site of annual professional surfing competitions and is recognized for its long wall and speed. The sheer power and speed of the Supertubes can mean it is often best suited for more seasoned surfers. The Point, another favorite break at JBay, offers surfers a long ride with a slower pace compared to the Supertubes. It's perfect for intermediate surfers as it still possesses enough of a challenge while minimizing the risk of a heavy wipeout. On larger swells, it links up with Supertubes, providing an even longer ride. The water temperature at Jeffreys Bay can vary dramatically due to the shifting currents. Generally, it's relatively cold due to the Benguela Current that flows from the Southern Ocean up the western coast of Africa. Wearing a wetsuit is almost a necessity year-round, though you will need a thicker one in the winter months when temperatures can drop even further. The weather conditions are highly unpredictable. Winds can sometimes flip onshore without notice, and while winter generally provides the most consistent weather and wave patterns, summer often brings big cyclone swell from the east, creating larger, more unpredictable waves. Overall, Jeffreys Bay offers some of the best surf on the planet. Its consistent right-hand point breaks cater to a range of surfing abilities, and its variable conditions keep even the most experienced surfers on their toes.
