Location guide

Weston-super-Mare, located in the United Kingdom, provides a unique surfing experience for those seeking an alternative to the bustling surfing hubs. Though it may not offer the conventional big wave surf experience, it certainly conceals delights for those ready to explore. This seaside resort is infamous for its massive tidal range, which is the second highest in the world. Most notably, this gives rise to the unique phenomenon of the Severn Bore, where incoming tides create waves that surfers can ride inland. The surf at Weston-Super-Mare isn't typically powerful, but it can produce some ridable waves, especially during the passage of deep Atlantic low-pressure systems during autumn and winter months. It's also worth mentioning that Weston-super-Mare's beach is largely made up of mudflats, which can make it challenging for surfing. The mudflats expose at low tide and the beach can get quite muddy and soft, requiring a bit of caution when going out for a surfing session. The best time to catch some waves would be two hours before high tide until two hours after high tide. To be able to surf freely, without worrying about the muddy beach, ensure that the tide is fully in. This way, the water covers the majority of the mudflats. Lastly, the winds also play a factor here, they typically blow from the southwest – an onshore direction for the beach, which is facing west. That being said, these aren't ideal wind conditions for clean wave faces, yet it can make the surf conditions a bit choppy. So, while the surfing conditions at Weston-super-Mare may not be pristine, the area offers its own unique charm for those willing to explore and adapt to its environment. It's a surfing scene detached from the expected, yet embedded with potential for those adventurous enough to try.
